When it comes to installing a new electricity connection, you may have many questions in mind. That's why we've compiled a list of frequently asked questions from customers when installing a new electricity connection.

The electrician is only qualified to work on the fuse box and your internal house wiring. Electricians are not qualified to work on the electricity supply or electricity meter.

Why can't an electrician do this work? 

You can complete any digging on land that you own. When digging we recommend that you follow the <a href="http://www.hse.gov.uk/electricity/precautions.htm">HSE guidance</a> and check before you dig to work safely while excavating.

What parts of this work can I do myself?

This will be dependent on the conditions at your property and the work needed. As a general guide, if we are digging this will happen on day one and sometimes day two. Then our engineers will carry out the electrical works which can take anything from 30 minutes to three hours, dependant on the conditions of your property and the electricity cable. Don’t worry, if you choose to go ahead with this, we’ll explain it all before the work is booked in.

How long will you be at my property for?

We always aim to work with you to get the work completed when you need it. There are some factors to consider that unfortunately aren’t in our control (such as time for the council to issue permits for us to dig in the road or path). Another important factor is the time it takes for your electricity supplier to move your electricity meter.

How long will it take before you can come out to do this?

Yes, of course. We complete over 6,000 jobs like this for our customers each year and we have qualified, knowledgeable teams to get this completed for you. Once complete, the electrical work that we carry out has a lifetime warranty and will be repaired at our cost (unless damaged by a third party) should there be a problem in the future.

Can I trust you to do this?

Please wait until we have visited you at your property and we can give you much more detail about what needs to be done. As a general guide, you need to do the following before our engineers arrive to carry out the work.

<li>You will need to have booked your electricity supplier (the company you pay your electricity bills to) to attend on the same day as we move your electricity supply. If you have not booked this, we cannot move the supply as this will leave you without power.</li>
<li>If you have chosen to do digging on your land yourself, this needs to all be complete.</li>
<li>If you have chosen to buy your electricity meter box yourself, this needs to be installed ready on the wall. Any internal wiring that is required should be complete before we arrive.</li>
</ul>

What work do I need to do before you arrive to do the work?

What's involved

Electricians or builders cannot carry out this work. To do this work the company you choose must be trained to work on the electricity network. This is something we can do or you can employ an independent connections provider. Check the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.lrqa.com/en/utilities/national-electricity-registration-scheme-ners/search-new/" target="_blank" title="Visit the Lloyds Register website">Lloyd Register website</a> for a list of connection providers active in our area. Please note that these companies tend to work on larger projects, not domestic work.

Can I get a cheaper price elsewhere?

The cost to complete these works may seem expensive. The cost is made up of:

<li>all materials used to complete the job</li>
<li>the time to survey your property</li>
<li>the time to plan the work</li>
<li>the time of our qualified engineers to carry out the work</li>
</ul>
Once complete, this work has a lifetime warranty and will be repaired at our cost should there be a problem in the future.

I didn't think this would be so expensive, why is it?

No, once our surveyor has been out to visit you we’ll send you a formal price which unfortunately is not negotiable.

Is your price negotiable?

The price is made up of all materials used to complete the job, the time to survey your property, plan the work and time of our qualified engineers to carry out the work.  All costs will be included in the price that we send you. Whilst it is rare for additional costs to be applied to the price, additional costs may be applied if you change your mind on what works you would like us to carry out, for example, if you move the position of your electricity supply. Additional costs may also be applied in the limited circumstances set out in the Terms and Conditions, for example if any third parties cause us to have to redesign the works, such as where a neighbour refuses to grant us consent to dig on their land. We recommend that you read and understand the Terms and Conditions that are referred to in your quote to ensure that you properly understand the circumstances where we may pass on additional costs to you.

What will your price include and will I receive any more costs from you once I've paid?

You can look into another company completing this work and employ an Independent Connections Provider. The company you choose must be trained to work on the electricity network. What other options do I have if I don’t want to pay this?

If our surveyor looks at your property and realises we have to dig in the road or pathway or if we’ll need any parking permits from the council then this will be included in the quote that we send to you. The charges from the council are what the council charge us. We do not add any mark up, or admin fees to these, we simply pass them across to you.

What about costs to the council, how does that work?

We recommend that you employ a builder and or an electrician to complete part of the works. You will also need to speak with the company you pay your electricity bills to, they may charge you to move the electricity meter.

What other costs am I going to have to pay?

You can buy your meter box yourself. There are a number of suppliers you can choose to buy these from and we’ll let you know when we come and visit your property. Please ensure whatever meter box you choose, it’s one that’s approved by us. It must be lockable and made from glass reinforced plastic with a baseboard fitted inside to mount the meter and electrical equipment. Please make sure you purchase a meter box that is the correct size to fit electricity equipment inside, slim fit boxes do not comply with our standards because they aren’t big enough.

What can I do myself to reduce this price?

We can dig this for you or you can arrange this yourself. We may need you to dig to a considerable depth to access the electricity cables which may involve using professional digging machinery. If you are doing the digging then please note digging near live electricity cables is dangerous particularly as electricity cables and other utilities may be present. You must ensure you have read and understood the booklet <a rel="noopener" href="http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/hsg47.htm" target="_blank" title="Visit HSE website">“Avoiding danger from Underground Services”</a> (HSG47) published by the Health and Safety Executive. It will be your responsibility to backfill the hole or trench, dispose of any leftover material and restore the original surface.

Can I do my own digging on my land?

No, our surveyor will visit your property at no cost.

Do I have to pay for the surveyor visit?

We will always aim to meet someone onsite, so we can talk through the work that is about to be completed. Lots of customers find this really useful. We are happy to meet with your electrician or builder too, please let us know who that will be when we contact you about booking the visit in.

Do I need to be there?

Can my builder or electrician go to the appointment because I worry that this is all too technical for me?

No not at all, just have an idea of where you would like your electricity meter installed. We’ll talk you through everything else.

Do I need to do anything before you visit me?

The appointment will take about an hour.

How long will the appointment be?

The visit slot will be between 8am and 1pm, however the surveyor will call you the day before to give you an estimated time of arrival. They will also call when 30 minutes away on the day.

Will you give me a time for the visit?

You aren’t committing to anything other than a free visit from one of our surveyors. We can talk you through the work you need and get a quote sent to you. You aren’t committed to paying that unless you want to go ahead.

You should not proceed with this application. If your installation does not comply with the emission limits of Stages 1 or 2 of IEC Technical Report 61000-3-4 you will need to ensure compliance prior to being offered a connection to the distribution network.

By making this application you understand and agree to the Terms and Conditions that:
<ul>
<li>You must install and operate the electricity storage and generation units exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1;</li>
<li>If UK Power Networks has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed or are being operated otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1 it may de-energise the connection and require that witness tests are undertaken in its presence and/or that the customer undertakes such remedial works as it shall deem appropriate; and</li>
<li>The customer shall bear its own and UK Power Networks’ costs associated with any witness tests and / or remedial works that UK Power Networks may require to be carried out if it has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed, or are being operated, otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1.</li>
</ul>
