Did you know you have a choice?

Did you know you can get quotes from an Independent Connection Provider (ICP) to complete some of the tasks involved in getting an electricity connection? Certain parts of the work can be done by approved ICPs, in addition to us.

What is an Independent Connection Provider (ICP)?

An Independent Connections Provider (ICP) is a certified company that specialises building electricity networks in line with the correct standards. ICPs will install these networks while ensuring they meet the necessary requirements for distributors, such as us and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNO), to effectively delivery electricity to customers.

What work can an ICP complete?

If you're wanting to get a new electricity connection or disconnect or change an existing connection, there are certain tasks that can be done by an ICP or an IDNO.

We have a table that outlines the different tasks involved in connecting a typical electricity network. This indicates which parts can be handled by an ICP, or which tasks can be done by us or an ICP, this is known as contestable work. On the other hand there are some tasks which can only be completed by us, this is known as non-contestable work. Download our table to find out more.

Are you an ICP or IDNO?

Our teams have created a variety of useful guides and tools to assist Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) and Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) in planning their projects. Browse the resources available find out more.

Other common questions

Where can I find another company to do the work?

For an ICP or IDNO to carry out electrical connections work, they must be registered with the National Electricity Registration Scheme (NERS), which is overseen by Lloyd's register. You can either search the complete list of registered companies or search for local companies operating in London, the South East and East of England.
