What's involved
New Connection
We understand that getting a new electricity connection involves several steps. Don't worry, we're here to simplify the process for you. Our teams follow a typical step-by-step approach when connecting a new electricity connection which we're happy to explain.
What's involved
Digging before we arrive
To install your new electricity connection, we’ll need to work on the electricity network which is usually underground and requires a trench. We can take care of the digging for you or you can arrange this yourself. If you decide to do the digging, we'll provide your with the necessary black tubing (ducting) to place inside the trench.
To prepare for our visit, there's a few things we need you to take care of:
- If you choose to carry out this digging yourself, the trench needs to be dug on your land
- A new electricity meter box and black tubing (ducting) will need to be installed on the outside wall of your property, we can give advice on where to buy this from
Parking for our vans
We need to park our vans close to where we work. If you don’t have off road parking or a guaranteed space nearby, we'll work with you to find a solution to make sure there's space available. If there are designated parking bays outside your property, we may need to apply to your council to suspend those spaces while we carry out the work.
Connecting to your property
We'll locate the closest and most suitable main electricity cable to your location, which we'll use to connect your cable. This is typically located on the road or pathway where we’ll need to dig a hole. Once the hole is dug, we’ll lay a new electricity cable and run it to the desired spot where you want your electricity meter.
We'll put the electricity cable into your meter box
For a new connection, electricity meter boxes need to be fitted on the outside of an external wall. We’ll make the electricity cable live by connecting the new cable to the main network cable and complete extensive safety checks to make sure it's all working correctly and safe before we leave. If we've handled the digging, we’ll return within 48 hours to fill the trench back to its original condition. However, if you carried out your own digging then you will need to fill the hole back in.
To make sure you can start using electricity as soon as we install your cable, you will need to arrange for your electricity supplier (the company you pay your electricity bills to) to visit you on the same day. This is because they are responsible for installing your electricity meter into your meter box. Once that's done your power will be ready to go.
