Cover my overhead power line (shrouding)
Working near power lines
Need to carry out work at your property but your overhead power lines are getting in the way? We may be able to help by installing a temporary cover which is also known as shrouding.
Working near power lines is dangerous which is why we want to make sure the relevant safety precautions are followed to make it safe for customers to complete their work. We offer a free service to arrange for one of our engineers to visit you to cover the overhead power line which attaches to your property.

Working near electricity cables which connect from pole to pole
Did you know, if you need to work near an electricity cable which runs from pole to pole, you may need to request a GS6 safety visit as we may not be able to shroud the power line.
Safety around power lines
You should always treat electricity power lines as being live. If you see them hanging low, damaged or grounded, please stay at least 10 metres away from the equipment and call us 24 hours a day on 0800 31 63 105 or 105. If you think they're causing significant risk to the public, please call 999.
We aim to process your request and arrange a site visit within 15 working days. Sometimes we may need longer, but we’ll contact you as soon as possible to confirm dates.
Request a free site visit
If you're ready to apply, the first step is to request a free site visit by completing our online form or by logging onto our portal.
As part of this process we'll need you to supply three photos showing:
- Where the overhead power line is attached to the outside of your property
- Where the overhead power line connects to the electricity pole
- The overhead power line itself.
We'll visit you to cover your overhead power line
We'll aim to visit you within 15 working days of processing your request. If we require additional visits, we'll let you know.
Overhead power line covered
Once covered, you can safely complete your work (covers are installed for incidental contact only, you should always continue to work safely around power lines)
Remove cover once you're done
We'll come back to remove the cover from your power line. This is usually confirmed when we contact you to book in your initial visit. If you were unable to confirm this, you can just let us know when you're finished.
