We're committed to providing you with a safe and reliable electricity supply.    We invest millions every year in upgrading and improving our electricity network. This involves regularly carrying out maintenance to prevent any damage to our electricity cables, lines and equipment. For example, we could be repairing or replacing an old or damaged underground cable. For our engineers to carry out this work safely, we may have to turn off the power in the area.
If we need to switch off your power, we will give you as much notice as possible, unless it’s an emergency situation. We’ll aim to give you at least 48 hours notice before we carry out the work. 
During the planned power cut we may also send out voice messages to let you know if we experience any issues, which could change the time your power comes back on.  Don’t worry this doesn’t happen very often. Preparations to consider before a power cut:
<ul>
<li>Keep a torch in a place where you can reach it easily.</li>
<li>Switch off appliances and lights, but leave one light on so you know when power has been restored.</li>
<li>It’s especially important to keep warm if the weather is cold. Dress warmly in several layers and have a hat, gloves and a blanket to hand. You can also reduce heat loss by closing doors on unused rooms and by closing curtains.</li>
<li>Cordless phones don’t work in a power cut. Phones with a cord will usually work in a power cut so either keep one always plugged in or have one you can plug-in in the event of a power cut. If you use a mobile phone keep a mobile phone ‘power bank’ charged-up so you can recharge your mobile phone during the power cut.</li>
<li>Power cuts will also affect things like stair lifts, bath hoists and adjustable beds. Make sure that any essential medical equipment has a battery back-up. This means you can keep using it, even if the power is out. If you have a stair lift, check it has a manual release handle, you can use this to return the lift to the ground floor if you have a power cut.</li>

How can I prepare for a planned power cut?

If you rely on electricity for medical equipment, it’s important that you let us know by calling us on <a href="tel:08003163105">0800 31 63 105</a> and we can add you to our <a href="/ukpn/power-cut/priority-services/" title="Priority Services">Priority Services Register</a>.  Power cuts will affect equipment such as stair lifts, bath hoists and adjustable beds. Make sure that any essential medical equipment has a battery back-up. This means you can keep using it, even if the power is out. If you have a stair lift, check it has a manual release handle, you can use this to return the lift to the ground floor if you have a power cut.

What extra help can you give customers who are dependent on electricity for medical reasons? 

Once we have confirmed a date and time for the planned power cut, we are unable to make any changes. This is because all of the preparation work has already been carried out. Our engineers have been booked to carry out the work, all materials have been ordered and we’ve also let other customers know in the area that the power cut will be happening at this time.

Can I change the date/time? 

Our regulator Ofgem states that we only have to provide 48 hours’ notice. However, we aim to give you as much notice as possible, unless it’s an emergency situation. We’ll send you a letter 12 days before we carry out the work.

Why wasn't I given more notice? 

Sometimes we may need to cancel or postpone the work because:
<ul>
<li>It isn’t safe for our engineers to carry out the work because of bad weather.</li>
<li>Our engineers have been reassigned to fix a large power cut or attend an emergency in the area.</li>
<li>We have been refused access to the land where we need to carry out the work.</li>
<li>We have been able to fix the problem and do not need to switch off your power.</li>
</ul>

Why have you cancelled or postponed my planned power cut?

We recommend setting your fridge freezer to the coldest setting 12 hours before the planned power cut to ensure it remains cold during the work. Don’t open the freezer door unless you have to, this helps food stay frozen for longer.

What should I do with my fridge freezer?

Before the planned power cut

Our advanced warning letters are sometimes dismissed as junk mail. If you are concerned that your address may have been missed, please give us a call on <a href="tel:08003163105">0800 31 63 105</a> and we can check our records to ensure we have the correct information for you.

Why wasn’t I told about the planned power cut?

The times given on your advanced warning letter are based on how long we think it will take to complete the work safely. Sometimes, we can complete the work sooner but it depends on the work involved and the weather conditions.

Can you get the power on quicker? 

We’re unable to turn the power off later or sooner than the times provided. The time frame is the amount of time we need to safely complete our work. Sometimes, your power may go off later if there are any complications when our engineers are carrying out the work, or if they have problems getting to the area.

Can you turn the power off earlier or later? 

Sometimes we may need to enter your property. This is because we may need to check a piece of equipment called a cut-out and a plug socket to make sure electricity is running safely into your property. This is called a ‘polarity check’.  We will need to carry out a check in the morning, before we switch off the power and carry out another check when we turn the power back on. If we need to do this, we will send you a letter before letting you know.
If you’re not around to give us access to your property we kindly ask that alternative arrangements are made. Maybe you could leave a key with a family member or a neighbour. Will you need to enter my property?

We only provide generators for customers who are medically dependent on electricity. We do not provide generators for businesses or personal use.

Can you give me a generator?

We usually provide generators for customers who are medically dependent on electricity. However, we recognise that there may be other situations where a generator is required. For example weddings or funerals.

Why did my neighbour get a generator and I didn't?

We do not offer compensation for planned power cuts. We follow standards set by the industry regulator Ofgem. Please read the <a href="https://media.umbraco.io/uk-power-networks/zdjf0oht/ukpn-egs-doc-april-2024.pdf" title="View the Electricity Guaranteed Standards">Electricity Guaranteed Standards</a> for more information.

Can I get compensation?

I've been told I need polarity check - What's this?

Here are some tips:
<ul>
<li>During a power cut the temperature of the water in your tank will drop gradually. This speed depends on the surrounding temperature and the volume of water inside the tank, i.e. a larger volume of water will take longer to cool down than a smaller volume of water.</li>
<li>For insulation, wrap the tank in blankets. If possible, fill hot water bottles with warm water and place them around the outside of the tank.</li>
<li>Without power, the water will lose oxygen gradually. So fish suppliers recommend a cheap bubble-up filter that can run off a battery-powered air pump. If you don’t have one then a normal bicycle pump will do the job.</li>
<li>Fish suppliers recommend disturbing the water surface for five minutes each hour during a power cut. A good way is to fill a jug with tank water then pour it back in, making as much movement as possible.</li>
</ul>

By making this application you understand and agree to the Terms and Conditions that:

<li>You must install and operate the electricity storage and generation units exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1;</li>
<li>If UK Power Networks has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed or are being operated otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1 it may de-energise the connection and require that witness tests are undertaken in its presence and/or that the customer undertakes such remedial works as it shall deem appropriate; and</li>
<li>The customer shall bear its own and UK Power Networks’ costs associated with any witness tests and / or remedial works that UK Power Networks may require to be carried out if it has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed, or are being operated, otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1.</li>

Please be aware that you are required to provide the commissioning sheets on the day after the planned commissioning date. The contact details of the relevant team will be included in the confirmation email you will receive within 10 working days after submitting the application.
Note: Your planned commissioning date must be at least 10 working days from the date of application, but not more than 3 months in advance as our connection offers are only valid for 3 months.
