Croydon power workers support Salvation Army food bank

Salvation Army food bank in Croydon has received a Christmas boost from local power workers.

Staff at UK Power Networks, based in Factory Lane, organised a collection for their local Salvation Army to support those struggling to make ends meet during the cost of living crisis.

They collected more than 15 bags of food, plus a further five boxes of donations including tea, coffee, tinned vegetables, soup, pasta, cereals and biscuits.

Neil Baker, network operations manager at UK Power Networks in Croydon, said: “I asked everyone attending our Christmas team meeting to bring a donation with them for the local food bank, to support our community.

“I hoped everyone would bring one item for the collection, but my car boot is full to overflowing with donations! It’s typical of the generosity of our teams and I’m delighted that we can show our support for the Salvation Army’s incredible work.”

The Salvation Army works with some of the most vulnerable people in society, from running food banks and checking up on people who live alone, to offering counselling.

Chris Waldock, community services director at the Salvation Army’s Croydon Citadel said: “We have provided over 3,000 food parcels this year, with the demand sadly continually growing with the cost of living crisis playing a significant part.

“Each food parcel is approximately £25 in value and is only an emergency food parcel to last a couple of days. It really is a significant amount of financial cost but the help of folk like UK Power Networks contributing and supporting means we can continue supporting those that really need our help at this time of year and throughout.”
