Connecting additional electricity meters (up to three)
Connect a small business
If you own a multi-use building such as flats above a shop and want to provide each individual tenant with their own electricity meter (up to three electricity meters in the building), you may find that your existing main electricity supply is already set up to support this. This typically means that you have a three phase electricity supply to the building but you may only be using one or two of the phases, meaning you have some spare. The good news is that your electricity supplier can go ahead and connect the additional meters to any unused phases.
We highly recommend contacting a qualified electrician first as they will be able to advise you on the best solution.
The steps you need to follow
Understanding your requirements
If you're not sure what you need or how to split your electricity supply, you should contact an electrician initially as they will be able help you understand what you need.
Your main electricity supply is ready to go
Your electrician may confirm that your electricity supply can support the changes you want to make. This usually means you already have a three phase electricity supply but not all of them are in use.
Request an MPAN
The next step would be for your supplier to contact us to request a new Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) for each new meter. This is an electricity supply number used to uniquely identify every electricity supply point in the country.
Install your electricity meter
After you've received your MPAN, your electricity supplier (the company you pay your bills to) can install the additional meters (up to three) to your spare phases.
No additional electrical work is required from our teams in this scenario.
