How do I connect multi-occupied buildings?

Connect a project

What is a multi-occupied building?

A multi-occupied building refers to a single building that has been divided into multiple premises. This can include flats, converted properties, or factories that have been split into smaller industrial units. It also includes any shared or communal areas within the building.

What is a Building Network Operator?

A Building Network Operator (BNO) is the company responsible for owning and maintaining the electrical infrastructure in a multi-occupied building. This includes the electrical equipment from the main intake fuse for the building up to each individual customer's electricity meter.

In some cases, the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) such as UK Power Networks can also act as the BNO. Other examples of BNOs can include, another contracted licensed distributor or the landlord or building management company.

If your landlord applies to alter or upgrade the electricity connection for your building, we will help with the design process. As part of this we will also assess the installation and verify ownership of the electrical equipment.

You can find out more about how to connect a multi-occupied building in our BNO Guide.

What's involved

1
Understanding your requirements

Typically when connecting a multi-occupied building, customers will either require a new electricity connections or an upgrade to existing connection. Your BNO or electrical contractor can advise you on what you need.

2
Complete our online form

If you have a clear idea of what you need, the next step is to submit an application. Once we receive your application, our dedicated teams will reach out to you. It's important that this application is completed by the landlord of the building. If you haven't already contacted your BNO or are not sure who it is, as part of this, we will confirm ownership of the electrical equipment.

3
We will send you a price

Once we have reviewed your application, we'll send you a price detailing the service we'll provide. If you decide to go ahead, we would need full payment to proceed with booking in the work.

4
We'll book in the work

If you're happy with the price and accepted our offer, we'll book in the work.

5
We'll complete the work

We'll complete any electrical work which we're handling for you.
