As the UK takes steps towards a more sustainable future, we're ready for the growing interest in customers wanting to install low carbon technologies (LCTs) such as electric vehicles chargers, heat pumps, solar panels and energy storage devices at their home or small sized business.
As a Distribution Network Operator (DNO), our primary role is to maintain the electricity network. This means that we're not directly involved in installing new technologies, this is taken care of by your chosen installer. However, we ensure that there is enough power available for you to connect to our electricity network.
How we can help you and your installer?
We recognise that customers may be at various stages of transitioning to low carbon technology. Our goal is to make the process as effortless as possible. If your electricity supply is sufficient to cope with the additional load, it's as simple as your installer informing us of your LCT installation. However, sometimes they may need us to upgrade your electricity supply first.
To help your installer, we've created useful guides with all the information they need. You can also use our guides to gain an understanding of the steps involved and who you need to contact to install LCT.
Here are some examples of low carbon technologies
- Electric car charger
An electric car charger is similar to filling your car with petrol, but instead of using fuel, it needs to be charged with electricity. It's like plugging in your car to get it powered up and ready to go. - Electric heat pump
A heat pump is a device that uses electricity to transfer heat from outside into your home or business, just like how a refrigerator works. When switching to greener heating options, heat pumps are the most common replacement to traditional heating methods. - Solar panels
Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic or PV panels, are devices that are typically installed on the roof of your property. They convert sunlight into electricity, which you can then use to power your home or business. - Storage system
A storage system stores the electricity generated by renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. Instead of using all the electricity right away, you can save some of it for later. It's like having a battery that stores excess energy.
Your installer will need to contact us on your behalf
Since you won't be able to do the installation work yourself, the first thing you need to do is choose an installer who will handle everything for you. If they need to notify us of your LCT installation or require an upgrade to your electricity supply, they will need to contact us on your behalf. This will help to make sure we receive the correct information.
Notifying us
Installers can notify us of installations using our automated Smart Connect portal. If upgrades to the electricity supply are required, our dedicated teams will reach out to installers directly to discuss the details.
Only installers can notify us on behalf of customers. This will help us ensure that we receive all the correct information when notifying us of an installation.
