What's involved
Add - Domestic & small business
We understand that upgrading your electricity supply involves several steps, some of which most customers are not aware of. Don't worry, we're here to simplify the process for you.
Our teams follow a typical step-by-step approach when connecting a new electricity connection which we're happy to explain.
Before we explain the process and what's involved, here are some typical examples of when an upgrade is usually needed.
Installing an electric vehicle charger, solar panels, energy storage or heat pumps (Low Carbon Technology)
You installer should contact us on your behalf. Find out more.
Installing power showers
Installing a Jacuzzi or hot tub
What's involved?
Digging before we arrive
To upgrade your electricity supply, we’ll need to work on the electricity network which is usually underground and requires a trench. We can take care of the digging for you or you can arrange this yourself. If you decide to do the digging, we'll provide you with the necessary black tubing (ducting) to place inside the trench.
To prepare for our visit, there's a few things we need you to take care of:
- If you choose to carry out this digging yourself, the trench needs to be dug on your land
- A new electricity meter box and black tubing (ducting) will need to be installed on the outside wall of your property, we can give advice on where to buy this from.
Parking for our vans
We need to park our vans close to where we work. If you don’t have off road parking or a guaranteed space nearby, we'll work with you to find a solution to make sure there's space available. If there are designated parking bays outside your property, we may need to apply to your council to suspend those spaces while we carry out the work.
On the day, we'll dig outside your property
We’ll find the nearest electricity cable to you, this is usually in the road or pathway where we’ll need to dig a large hole. From this hole, we’ll lay a new electricity cable and run it to where you want your electricity meter to be.
We'll pull your electricity cable into your meter box
We’ll pull your electricity cable to its new position, we always recommend for this to be on an outside wall.
We’ll re-connect your electricity supply
We'll then re-connect your electricity supply to the main network. This will be followed by safety checks to make sure it's all working correctly and safe before we leave. If we've handled the digging, we’ll return within 48 hours to fill the trench back to it's original condition. However, if you carried out your own digging then you will need to fill the hole back in.
To make sure you can start using electricity as soon as we upgrade your cable, you will need to arrange for your electricity supplier (the company you pay your electricity bills to) to visit you to move and connect the electricity meter. Your supplier owns your electricity meter so they are the only company that can do this.
