What do I need to know?

Behind the meter refers to anything that happens onsite, on the energy user’s side of the meter. Conversely, anything that happens on the grid side is deemed to be in front of the meter. What does ‘behind the meter’ mean?

Working on a building that contains a substation can be tricky. UK Power Networks require you to maintain 24hr unrestricted access to the site for vehicles and operator access for faults and maintenance.
If you are not altering the substation access or loading, then the first port of call will be our consents team who can be reached via email: <a href="mailto:consents@ukpowernetworks.co.uk">consents@ukpowernetworks.co.uk</a>
If you need to alter the substation as you cannot maintain access, or if demolition means the risk to the substation is too great, then you will need to get a project raised to access these risks and potentially move the substation. Once your initial investigations have been completed further pre-application advice can be obtained via a <a href="/ukpn/ask-the-expert/" title="Ask the expert">surgery session with our Ask the Expert team</a>.

Working near buildings/substations

Timescales – formal quotes are determined by the application requirements e.g. whether you request UK Power Networks to quote for all of the work (where Guaranteed Standards of Performance (GSoPs) apply) or if you want a non-contestable only quote (which is governed by Licence Condition 15 or LC15). Different timescales apply to different voltage levels:

<li>If your application is for UK Power Networks to quote for all works (GSoPs), the maximum turnaround time is:
<ul>
<li>45 working days for LV generation from receipt of all information</li>
<li>65 working days for HV or EHV generation</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>If your application requires UK Power Networks to quote for non-contestable only (LC15) the maximum turnaround time is:
<ul>
<li>30 working days for LV generation from receipt of all information</li>
<li>50 working days for HV generation</li>
<li>65 working days for EHV generation</li>
</ul>
</li>

Timescales and upfront costs

Before connecting any small-scale generation to the electricity network, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) will need to receive an application or be notified. If the panels are rated below 3.68kW, DNOs require notification by receiving a completed ENA G98 Form B 28 days after installation OR a ENA G99 Form A1.1 application form in advance for above 3.68kW.
Our online Smart Connect portal can auto approve panels up to 5kW in certain circumstances. Planning permission for solar panels

A design analysis needs to be carried out by a project designer and distribution planning before UK Power Networks can say how much capacity is available. The electricity network is dynamic and can change considerably with new connections and alterations in the pipeline. The only definite supply available to a customer is what a customer has signed up for. If you would like to find out the maximum available capacity for a specific Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN), we can carry out a Nature of Supply site visit to determine this based on the installed cables and equipment. Please be aware, this is likely to be chargeable at £210 (including VAT). If you would like to make a Nature of Supply enquiry, <a href="/ukpn/guide-pages/pre-application-support/#Tools" title="Pre application support" data-anchor="#Tools">visit our Nature of Supply section</a>. If you require a quotation for a new connection or an upgrade, our connections team can help. Please <a href="#" title="Upgrade over 70kVA application form">complete our application form</a> and include any relevant supporting documentation, such as site plans, location maps, and a letter of authority. Once received, we will be able to action your request and begin the process of providing you with a quotation for the works.

How do I know my available capacity?

The size and layout of the substations have been designed to suit the safe installation and maintenance of the equipment that they house. In some rare circumstances special dispensation is granted to deviate from the agreed standard.
A GRP substation requires a smaller footprint so may fit into the space available but would have other drawbacks. The GRP substation offers less noise protection and fire rating, therefore is normally located further away from other buildings to mitigate the impact.

By making this application you understand and agree to the Terms and Conditions that:

<li>You must install and operate the electricity storage and generation units exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1;</li>
<li>If UK Power Networks has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed or are being operated otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1 it may de-energise the connection and require that witness tests are undertaken in its presence and/or that the customer undertakes such remedial works as it shall deem appropriate; and</li>
<li>The customer shall bear its own and UK Power Networks’ costs associated with any witness tests and / or remedial works that UK Power Networks may require to be carried out if it has reason to believe that the electricity storage and generation units have been installed, or are being operated, otherwise than exactly as described in the application form and in accordance with the EREC G98, EREC G100 and EREC G5/4-1.</li>
</ul>

Please be aware that you are required to provide the commissioning sheets on the day after the planned commissioning date. The contact details of the relevant team will be included in the confirmation email you will receive within 10 working days after submitting the application.
Note: Your planned commissioning date must be at least 10 working days from the date of application, but not more than 3 months in advance as our connection offers are only valid for 3 months.

During a power cut we can text you updates and give you an estimated time that your power will be back on. We can also let you know when there's a large power cut in your area.
