Renewable energy sources

Technical losses

An increasing percentage of electricity is produced by carbon free sources of energy such as wind and the sun. These generators are typically smaller than a traditional power station and, because they don’t require cooling or traditional fuel supplies, can be located much closer to the customer.

The main advantage of this type of generation is that it is carbon free as well as reducing networks losses. Being located closer to customers they will incur lower distribution (and transmission) losses where the generation and load are matched.

We are investigating how losses vary with changing generator output and different demand profiles. By understanding the interaction between the two it may be possible for us to control power flow within the network to achieve minimal network losses.
